What to wear in Egypt & Jordan

When planning a trip to Egypt and Jordan, many travelers wonder about the local customs and dress codes. While it is true that some people in these countries dress according to traditional customs and religious practices, it’s important to note that Cairo and Amman are vibrant, cosmopolitan cities where a variety of styles coexist.

In Cairo, Egypt’s bustling capital, you’ll find a dynamic blend of ancient history and modern culture, with locals and visitors alike dressed in everything from traditional attire to contemporary fashion. Similarly, Amman, the capital of Jordan, offers a rich tapestry of cultural influences, embracing a cosmopolitan vibe where traditional clothing and the latest fashion trends create a unique and inclusive atmosphere.

Must-consider for Dressing

As a tourist, you have more flexibility and aren’t required to cover up (except at religious sites). You can wear your usual clothes, but considering local customs, and dressing respectfully will help you blend in better.

Stick to the two “C”s while packing: conservative and cool – cool as in comfortable for the (very) hot weather, ensuring you’re comfortable at all times.

  • Fabrics: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing like linen, cotton, and quick-dry fabrics.

  • Style: Opt for loose-fitting styles and avoid dark colors to stay comfortable in the heat. While white will look great in your pictures, keep in mind that dessert dust is everywhere.

  • Cover Up: When visiting religious sites, cover your shoulders and knees. While not required everywhere, it’s best to leave short shorts at home and wear summer outfits that cover from your shoulders to your knees. This shows respect and keeps you comfortable as you explore.
  • Footwear: Make sure to wear comfortable shoes at all times. Sneakers are a great choice, as are sandals with heel straps. The terrain at historical sites can be dusty, rocky, and uneven, so having sturdy, supportive footwear is key to enjoying your adventures without any discomfort.

     

  • Swimwear: Relax! You can wear your regular swimsuit at hotel pools catering to tourists. No need to worry about a dress code.

Don’t forget a stylish hat and sunglasses to protect yourself from the intense sun.

What should female travellers wear in Egypt?

​​Women traveling in Egypt & Jordan are held to a more conservative dress standard than men. You don’t need to dress exactly like a local, but keeping in mind the two “C”s  (conservative and cool) will help you avoid unwanted attention and ensure a more enjoyable, immersive experience.

General Guidelines:

  • Arms & Legs: Aim for garments that fall below the knee and keep your shoulders covered. While tank tops and shorts aren’t the best choice on their own –you’ll stand out as a tourist – you can still incorporate them into a more conservative style. Just be mindful of the length of your shorts to respect cultural norms. Pairing a loose cover-up with a tank top is a great way to stay cool while trying to be conservative.
  • Layering: Pack shawls, loose kimonos, light cardigans/ jackets, to easily cover up in more conservative areas.
  • Modesty: While it’s not mandatory to cover your head, for mosque visits, you’ll need a headscarf and to wear clothing that extends to the ankles. You can find tunics and headscarves available for a small fee at many sites, or you can bring your own light shawl to use as a head cover.
